What a Golf Handicap Spreadsheet Actually Tracks

A handicap is not your average score. Under the World Handicap System, a Handicap Index is built from your better recent rounds, adjusted for how hard the course played. The idea is simple: it describes the score you are capable of, not the one you shot on a windy Saturday when you lost two balls.

You cannot get there from the score alone. The same 88 means different things on a short municipal course and on a long championship setup. The course rating and the slope are what make those rounds comparable.

The three numbers every round needs

• Your score. The adjusted gross score for the round, after the usual maximums on a hole. Writing down a raw total and calling it done will drift away from the system.
• Course rating. What a scratch golfer is expected to shoot from that set of tees.
• Slope. How much harder the course plays for a bogey golfer relative to a scratch golfer. Slope 113 is the neutral mark.

Both rating and slope are printed on the scorecard, and they change when you move up or back a tee. If you play more than one set of tees, store them separately. Mixing them is the fastest way to invent a handicap that does not match your game.

Index versus the number you play to today

The Handicap Index travels with you. The course handicap is that index translated to the tees in front of you today. A spreadsheet that only stores “my handicap is 14” is missing half the job. You want the history of rounds, the tees, and a calculation you can re-check.
